In Darklands, a limited set of attributes represent a character's abilities.
Generally, attributes are determined by the characters background and are very difficult to acquire in-game, as opposed to skills.
During character creation, successive stages affect the character's attribute set differently:
gender selection introduces the basic attribute set, with only modest difference depending on your selection
it determines the number of EPs that you can spend to further enhance your attributes
attributes are capped at 40 during this stage
each occupation will apply some small modifications to your attribute set, depending on your selection (except for the Soldier selection, which leaves them unchanged)
The resulting values are the 'initial' attribute values.
During the game, 'current' attribute values can easily be altered temporarily by imbibing certain potions, or by praying to certain saints; the change will eventually wear off, and the attribute's value will restore to it's 'initial' value.
Endurance and Strength are special in that damage is indicated by decreasing their current values.
Permanent changes - i.e. altering the 'initial' attribute value - are only possible through some rare events:
Failing the dwarven puzzles in the mines will permanently decrease one of the party leader's attributes as a punishment.
Rescuing the schrat from the witch hunt may reward you with an apple that, when consumed, will increase one of the character's attributes.

They all work in a similar way, except for Divine Favor. DF always starts at 99, and acts as a reserve that can be consumed to supplicate saints.
